A feed is a very useful way to deliver contents, because it contains only informations. There isn’t any theme or graphical amenity, only data. Because of this it doesn’t matter how many people simply “see” your feeds, but how many of them want to know them. They are people that trust you, so it’s valuable their number.
This plugin tries to do this work for you.

Basically it assigns a (pseudo-random) ID to every person that read your feed. It’s a technique that many people on the web have thought, although its use isn’t much widespread. Since it dinamically assigns an ID to every request of your feed (that doesn’t have already one, obviously), you must block the Search engine bots to access to your feeds, you can use the included robots.txt if you are not able to write your own (do not overwrite an existing one, however, append the contents if you already have one robots.txt).

Moreover there will be surely some problems with the old subscribers of your feed, they will continue to see you feed as before and will receive every time a new ID so they won’t be counted.

At the moment you can let them be counted simply lowering the number of requests needed to be counted as a subscribers to 1 (default: 2) and lowering the number of days from the last use after that the subscriber is no more counted as a subscriber to 1 (default: 2). Obviously this isn’t a perfect solutions, but this is a beta release.

There is an options page under the Options » FeedMaster tab and another one to show stats under Dashboard » FeedMaster, now with graphs. You can choose to show your subscriber, in the dashboard and/or in the sidebar, in the latter one both in the graphical way and simply as text.

It’s a beta release, do not use in production sites. If you want to take some risks install it only if your able to manage databases, wordpress plugins, php and crashes without becoming mad.
Since it’s a beta it will delete all data created when you deactivated it.

I don’t speak english fluently because I don’t use it in, but I can understand it well so if you have suggestions feel free to write them in comments.

1. Upload the folder feedmaster to the `/wp-content/plugins/` directory
2. Optional: if you want to have more real stats place the robots.txt file contained in the feedmaster folder in your main wordpress folder.
3. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
4. If you have widgets plugin (included after Wordpress 2.2 release) simply put in the sidebar the included widget, if you want to display on your blog the number of your subscribers. Otherwise, or if you want to show the antipixel image alone then read the README.

Is the image that display subscribers cached ?

Yes, albeit roughly.

Are there security flaws ?

I hope not, but this is a beta release so it’s likely.

Why don’t use Feedburner ?

Feedburner it’s a good service if you don’t need more specific data or don’t want better control, but personally I love freedom and to learn, for me to use an external services, is simply constraining. In a practical view you cannot count all the subscribers of every feeds that you have with Feedburner, because you cannot register all of them on Feedburner.

Il feed è un modo molto utile per distribuire i contenuti, perché contiene solo informazioni, senza quei necessari fronzoli grafici che inevitabilmente accompagnano un sito. Appunto per questo non importa quante persone “vedono” il tuo feed, ma quante di loro vogliono seguirlo. Sono persone che hanno fiducia in te, nelle tue opinioni, per questo è significativo il numero di questi ultimi.
Questo plugin cerca di far questo lavoro per te.

Fondamentalmente assegna un ID (pseudo-casuale) ad ogni persona che legge il tuo feed. É una tecnica pensata da molta persone, benché non sia molto diffusa in pratica. Dato che assegna un ID ad ogni richieste del tuo feed (ovviamente, se non ne ha già uno), devi bloccare l’accesso dei bot dei motori di ricerca al tuo sito, per farlo puoi usare il file robots.txt incluso se non sei grado di scriverne uno da te (non cancellarne uno esistente, comunque, aggiungi il contenuto alla fine di quello vecchio se ne hai giù uno). Devi caricarlo nella directory principale del tuo blog.

Inoltre sicuramente ci saranno dei problemi con i vecchi lettori del tuo feed, continueranno a vedere il tuo feed come prima e riceveranno ogni volta un nuovo ID e quindi non saranno conteggiati.

Al momento puoi includerli nel conteggio semplice diminuendo il numero di richieste necessarie per essere considerato lettore del feed ad 1 (default: 2) e diminuendo il numero di giorni dall’ultimo uso dopo i quale il lettore non è più contato ad 1 (default: 2).
Ovviamente non è una soluzione ottimale, ma è una beta release.

Esiste una pagina di opzioni sotto la linguetta Opzioni » FeedMaster ed un’altra per mostrare le statistiche sotto Bacheca » FeedMaster, ora con grafici. Puoi anche scegliere di mostrare i tuoi lettori, nella bacheca e/o nella barra laterale, nell’ultimo caso sia in forma grafica che semplicemente come testo.
Dato che è una beta cancellerà tutti i dati al momento della disattivazione.

É una beta release, non usarla in siti online. Se sei disposto a prenderti qualche rischio installalo solamente se sei in grado di gestire database, plugin di wordpress e crash senza diventare matto.

Scrivi pure suggerimenti ed osservazioni nei commenti.

1. Carica la cartella nella directory `/wp-content/plugins/`
2. Opzionale: se vuoi avere statistiche più realistiche piazza il file robots.txt contenuto nella cartella feedmaster nella directory principale di wordpress.
3. Attiva il plugin nella sezione ‘Plugins’ di WordPress
4. Se hai il plugin widgets (integrato dopo Wordpress 2.2) inserisci semplicemente nella barra laterale il widget incluso nel caso in cui tu voglia mostrare sul tuo blog il numero dei tuoi lettori. Altrimenti (se non hai i widgets e vuoi comunque mostrare i tuoi lettori), oppure se vuoi mostrare solo l’antipixel leggi il file LEGGIMI.

C’è una cache per l’immagine che mostra i lettori ?

Sì, benché abbastanza rozza.

Ci sono pericoli per la sicurezza ?

Spero di no, ma dato che è una beta release è possibile.

Perché non usare Feedburner ?

Feedburner è un ottimo servizio se non hai bisogno di dati più specifici o non vuoi maggior controllo, ma personalmente mi piace la libertà e la possibilità di imparare, per me usare servizi esterni è semplicemente limitante. In termini più pratici è impossibile tener traccia di tutti i lettori di ogni feed del tuo blog, dato che non puoi registrarli tutti su Feedburner.
